The company sells heavyweight motorcycles designed for cruising on the highway. Harleys have a distinctive design and exhaust note. They are especially noted for the tradition of heavy customization that gave rise to the chopper-style of motorcycle. Except for the modern VRSC model family, current Harley-Davidson motorcycles reflect the styles of classic Harley designs.

Harley-Davidson sustains a loyal brand community which keeps active through clubs, events, and a museum. Licensing of the Harley-Davidson logo accounts for almost 5% of the company’s net revenue.

Before there were choppers, there was the bobber, meaning a motorcycle that had been "bobbed," or relieved of excess weight by removing parts, particularly the fenders, with the intent of making it lighter and thus faster, or at least making it look better in the eyes of a rider seeking a more minimalist ride. An early example of a bobber is the 1940 Indian Sport Scout "Bob-Job" which toured in the 1998 The Art of the Motorcycle exhibition. Indian Scouts and Chiefs of the time came with extravagantly large, heavily valenced fenders, nearly reaching the center of the wheel on the luxurious 1941 Indian Series 441 while racing bikes had tiny fenders or none at all. The large and well-appointed bikes exemplified the "dresser"  motorcycle aesthetic and providing a counterpoint to the minimalist bobber, and cafe racers. Choppers would grow into and explore the dimensions of the space between the stripped-down bobbers and weighed-down dressers.
In the post-World War II United States, servicemen returning home from the war started removing all parts deemed too big, heavy, ugly or not absolutely essential to the basic function of the motorcycle, such as fenders, turn indicators, and even front brakes. The large, spring-suspended saddles were also removed in order to sit as low as possible on the motorcycle's frame. These machines were lightened to improve performance for dirt-track racing and mud racing.

Choppers Motorcycle

A chopper is a type of motorcycle that was either modified from an original motorcycle design ("chopped") or built from scratch to have an authentic appearance. The main features of a chopper that make it stand out are its longer frame design accompanied by a stretch front end (or rake). To achieve a longer front end, while the frame is being designed, the fabricator will tilt the neck of the frame at less of an incline and install a longer fork. Another unique aspect of a chopper design is that there is usually no rear suspension meaning the frame of the motorcycle will extend from the neck (or front of the frame) all the way to the rear wheel. This can make handling the motorcycle more challenging and the ride a bit more "bumpy". These attributes may seem radical to some but is necessary for the look that is desired. One look that is becoming more popular with chopper designs is a low frame to ground clearance or a low-rider look. Well known examples of chopper designs are the customized Harley-Davidsons seen in the 1969 film Easy Rider.

It’s not very often that you see a guilded chopper, but with 23kt gold machine turned iron crosses, it’s hard to deny this Bigdog’s bling. Keeping with the gunmetal grey metallic base, we added huge basboat flake, Planet color Apple red candy, and trimmed it all with tons of freehand oldschool pinstripe. Though Mr. Lee loved his Bigdog, he couldn’t turn down an offer for this chopper to be in the upcomming movie “The Book of Eli” starring Denzel Washington. So the Bike is gone but he’s already got a new one just itching for a new skin.

 RETRO VINTAGE MOTORCYCLES HONDA
Classic Motorcycle Honda Hopper Challenge.

This 450cc bike was the first double overhead cam engine in a Honda street bike. This engine will rev up to 10,000 rpm, an engine speed that would turn British bikes into a pile of broken bits. The Black Bomber was Honda’s message to the British “Here we come” (the 4 cylinder CB 750 was the message “too late – here we are”). The Black Bomber was considered too old in its styling and was changed to a more modern look in 1968. Collectors, of course, want the “ugly” Black Bomber. This bike is unrestored in original condition with very low mileage for a 40 year old bike.

Modern Vespa : Vespa GTS 300 Super
GTS SUPER &amp SUPERSPORT Vespafans

Vespa has built a reputation for classic, retro-styled scooters, trading on its iconic styling. The Quarantasei concept unveiled at EICMA however is a look toward ahead, and possibly the most futuristic looking Vespa ever.

The Quarantasei is named for the number 46, which represents the year Vespa first began producing scooters. (UPDATE: The Piaggio Group has quietly decided to rename the concept scooter the Vespa 946. The new name is much easier to spell and pronounce for non-Italian speakers, making it easier to market – if Piaggio ever decides to bring the 946 to production …)

Designed by the Vespa Pontedera Style Center, the Quarantasei maintains classic Vespa lines established from the original 1945 MP6 prototype, the “Wasp” that became forefather of all Vespas.

The most distinguishable element of the Quarantasei’s design is the aggressive forward lean in the rear, emphasized by the hanging seat and the way the bottom of the frame rises up towards the wasp-like tail.

While the design is purely a concept, a glimpse of possible future models, its powerplant is very real and likely to go into production in upcoming scooters. Piaggio developed a new fuel-injected 125cc four-stroke, three-valve air-cooled engine for the Quarantasei. According to Piaggio, the engine’s three-valve timing optimizes the load motion in the cylinder and the positioning of the spark plug, increasing combustion and helping keep components cool.

Piaggio claims a maximum output of 11.7 hp at 8250 rpm while torque peaks at 7.6 at 7000 rpm. A 150cc version claims peak output of 13.0 hp at 8000 rpm and torque of  9.3 at 6500 rpm.

Javeen Mathew stopped by with her family who spent the evening at the mall watching the show, which included classic moves such as wheelies and burnouts – the latter the term given when the rear tyres are spun until they emit plumes of smoke.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s very impressive,” said Ms Mathew, an Indian expatriate.

The event marked the opening of the outdoor events season as the hot weather in the country begins to ease. “It’s so nice to be able to start doing things like this outdoors again. We are very lucky to have events like this on our doorstep,” Ms Mathew added.

  Rainbow Cake: Januari 2013

Vespa has evolved from a single model motor scooter manufactured in 1946 by Piaggio & Co. S.p.A. of Pontedera, Italy - to a full line of scooters and one of seven companies today owned by Piaggio - now Europe's largest manufacturer of two-wheeled vehicles and the world's fourth largest motorcycle manufacturer by unit sales.

From their inception, Vespa scooters have been known for their painted, pressed steel unibody which combines a complete cowling for the engine (enclosing the mechanicals and concealing dirt or grease), a flat floorboard (providing foot protection), and a prominent front fairing (providing wind protection) -- into a structural unit as well as a singularly endearing and enduring shape.

As the first globally successful scooter, the Vespa has enjoyed tremendous prominence in popular culture -- and has become a symbol of stylish personal transportation. Vespa history

Vintage Harley Davidson
HarleyDavidsonClassic FLH

The ’60s were a revolutionary time for motorcycling, as Japanese brands made great inroads into the U.S. market with small, lightweight bikes offering exceptional performance for their size. But the Glide line was a perfect example of Harley’s policy of evolution, rather than revolution, in developing its bikes.

For ’65, the Glide still came with the venerable 74-cubic-inch (1,200cc) “Panhead” motor, which got that nickname from its pie-pan-shaped rocker-arm covers. Panheads had powered big Harleys for 18 years, including models such as the Hydra Glide and the follow-up Duo Glide. In ’66, though, the company would switch to the more modern Shovelhead design that would carry it all the way into the ’80s.

But while this machine had a motor rooted in the past, it also looked to the future with a feature that earned it the Electra Glide name: an electric starter. This was the first big Harley to feature push-button starting, along with the required 12-volt electrical system. But it also retained a kickstarter for traditionalists.

In keeping with that “something old, something new” approach, the company also offered ’65 Glide buyers a choice of either hand or foot shifting. Harley felt that the foot shift would appeal to new riders and those used to British bikes, while the old-style hand shift would be favored by the company’s hard-core base of loyal riders.

All together, that mix of features makes the 1965 Electra Glide a perfect period piece, an artifact of a company in the process of adapting its products to meet changing demands

The company responsible for the motorcycle production was Fabbrica Candele Accumulatori Maserati S.p.A.

After the Second World War, many Italians needed affordable transportation; however, as per the Capriolo, many companies were not allowed to return to manufacturing the same items as they did before or during the wars. The result was a diversification by many manufacturers into motorcycle (or scooter) production. Rather than design a motorcycle from scratch, Maserati chose (in 1952) to purchase a respected manufacturer of motorcycles: Italmoto.

Having transferred the manufacturing from Italmoto’s base in Via Ferrarese, Bologna, to Modena, the first Maserati motorcycle was offered to the public (it was, in fact, a rebadged 160-cc 4-stroke Italmoto). That first motorcycle was given the model code 160-T4.

The Maserati in the photograph is a 1961 Maserati 50/T2 Super Sport. These machines were aimed at younger riders who wanted a sporting looking motorcycle, but were restricted by their age to the size or type. It had a three speed gearbox with a hand shifter on the left handlebar (similar to the scooters of the time) and was capable of 45 mph.

Solvang Motorcycle Museum

Solvang, California is a small town northwest of Santa Barbara in the Santa Ynez valley. This place is known to most as a tourist attraction town where one can find Danish food, windmills and buildings painted to look like they belong in a small European hamlet. To motorcyclists, it is the home to a sampling of Virgil Elings’ motorcycle collection known as the “Solvang Motorcycle Museum”.

Word has it that less than half of his bikes are on display here at any one time so you can know that the next time you pass through there will probably be something on the floor that you haven’t seen before. For a small fee of $10 you can spend as much time as you want looking the bikes over. There are no velvet ropes or glass panels to keep your at a distance, here you are able inspect the bikes as closely as you desire. Just don’t touch them.

Here are a handful of pictures that we took. To see the rest cruise through our gallery HERE
